This article describes work at the Met Office to use the binary data, starting with UK reports, and to improve the processing. ![]() There is also a trend for some radiosondes not to use a pressure sensor. As part of a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) migration from alphanumeric codes, binary format radiosonde data are now reported from some countries at higher vertical resolution, higher precision and with extra metadata. Despite their relative sparsity radiosonde reports are still important for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) because they provide complete vertical profiles through much of the atmosphere and act as reference data for aircraft and satellite reports.
